BIOGRAPHY
Yoshihiro Kondo was born in Kawasaki, Japan, and began studying the piano at the age of four.
He graduated at the top of his class from Toho Gakuen School of Music and won Second Prize at the 1987 Japan Music Competition. After completing his studies in Japan, he continued advanced training in the Meisterklasse at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich under the distinguished pianist Gerhard Oppitz.
In 1992, Kondo made his debut with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, earning immediate critical acclaim. His official Japanese debut followed in 1995, and his first CD release in 1996 quickly established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation in Japan. Since then, he has maintained an active international career, releasing more than thirty CD and DVD titles on major labels including Denon, Philips, and Decca. His extensive discography encompasses solo repertoire, concertos, and chamber music.
Renowned for his refined tonal palette, lyrical sensitivity, and elegant musicianship, Kondo has built a distinguished career through a wide-ranging repertoire and consistently acclaimed performances. Between 1998 and 2008, he presented a recital series of twenty concerts at Festival Hall in Osaka. In 1999, marking the 150th anniversary of Frédéric Chopin’s death, he undertook a major nationwide tour in Japan, receiving enthusiastic public and critical response.
In 2001, he appeared in the Seven Stars Gala Concert organized by Myung-Whun Chung, performing with celebrated cellist Jian Wang. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his Japanese debut, he gave commemorative recitals at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and The Symphony Hall in Osaka in 2005.
Kondo has performed extensively throughout Europe and Asia. In 2002, he appeared as soloist on the Japan tour of the George Enescu Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra. He gave a recital at the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein in 2006, and in 2010 was invited to the International Chamber Music Festival EuroArt Praha, where he performed with the Martinů String Quartet. In 2016, he made his debut in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor.” In 2018, he was invited to perform with the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra in South Korea.
Throughout his career, Kondo has appeared with numerous orchestras in Japan and abroad, collaborating with distinguished conductors including Neeme Järvi, Thomas Sanderling, Cristian Mandeal, Yuzo Toyama, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, and Junichi Hirokami.
His recordings of Beethoven piano sonatas, produced in collaboration with guitarist Daisuke Suzuki, have been particularly praised for their depth and maturity of interpretation. More recently, he contributed detailed performance commentaries to the six-volume New Edition: Liszt Works, published by Shunjusha between 2024 and 2026.
Since July 2026, he has been under the exclusive management of STEP Corporation.
Yoshihiro Kondo's artistic activities encompass solo recitals, concerto performances, and chamber music, taking him to concert stages throughout Japan and abroad. With an extensive repertoire ranging from the Classical and Romantic periods to Impressionism and contemporary music, his performances are distinguished by profound musical insight, structural clarity, and poetic sensitivity, captivating audiences with interpretations of exceptional depth and refinement.
At the core of his repertoire are the works of Beethoven and Chopin. His Beethoven performances include major sonatas such as the Waldstein, Appassionata, the late sonatas Nos. 28–32, and the monumental Hammerklavier. His long-standing engagement with Chopin embraces the Piano Concertos, Études, Scherzos, Piano Sonatas, Ballades, Polonaise-Fantaisie, Barcarolle, and Nocturnes. Beyond these composers, Kondo performs a wide range of works by Brahms, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, Barber, and many others, exploring the distinctive musical language and aesthetic character of each composer.
As a concerto soloist, he maintains a broad repertoire including Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Ravel, and has appeared with numerous orchestras in Japan and internationally. In recent years, he has also devoted increasing attention to chamber music, expanding his artistic perspective through string quartets, duo recitals, and chamber versions of concerto repertoire. Collaborations with leading musicians continue to inspire new dimensions in his musical expression.
Alongside recital appearances throughout Japan, Kondo continues to perform internationally in cities including Munich, Prague, Vienna, and Seoul. He is also widely recognized for his exceptional knowledge of Bechstein pianos, actively presenting their history, design philosophy, and distinctive tonal characteristics through recitals, public masterclasses, lecture-performances, and educational activities. By integrating performance with in-depth musical and instrumental research, Kondo's interpretations reveal the essence of each work with remarkable clarity and conviction, whether in solo, concerto, or chamber music settings.
